Went to two job interviews last weekend. One job is pretty cool but they let slip that their pay isn’t. The other one is ok and the contract they offer is top notch, unfortunately the application period is till Sunday, so I won’t know what’s what before Monday. Got offered the job that is really cool but pays less. Refused and told them why. Got a reply almost immediately asking what I thought was reasonable and telling me that I was their top choice for the job. I put the ball back into their half by telling them what other jobs I’m applying to offer and asking how far they can go, and what they can offer long-term. Maybe, if I can get them up enough, it’s at least a good plan b. I have never done this. As a teacher, almost all positions come with a clearly set pay, no haggling possible. This is fun!

I love negotiating like that, especially when they really want you. Best of luck in your job search. Still living in the same area or did you move?

Still living in the Munich area, but both jobs are 500 kms (mediocre pay) and 900 kms (perfect contract) away. So I’m clearly willing to move for a good job, but the threshold is a little higher than for people who are local. In my area, I’m pretty much limited to jumping from (well-paid) temp job to temp job, which is OK-ish but not really ideal. Teachers have to develop some sort of relationship with their students, so having to move on every year or even every semester isn’t perfect. But to make me move, it has to be good. I also feel quite confident that I will/might get the other job. Aced the interview, but it’s a government job so they have to play by the rules and wait out the application period and see whoever applies.
With all that in mind, I will haggle them hard.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I imagine you can probably look up the salary range for the government job, right? Definitely a useful negotiating tool.

There are pretty neat tools to tell which level gets you what. They were quick to respond with a slightly better offer and a garanteed raise after one year. Still not enough, but they are moving.
